Summary

The midnight hour approaches in an almost empty all-night diner。 Mari sips her coffee and glances up from a book as a young man, a musician, intrudes on her solitude。 Both have missed the last train home。
Later, Mari is interrupted again by a girl from the Alphaville Hotel; a Chinese prostitute has been hurt by a client, and she needs Mari's help。
Meanwhile Mari's beautiful sister Eri sleeps a deep, heavy sleep that is 'to perfect, too pure' to be normal; she has lain asleep for two months。 But tonight a the digital clock displays 00:00, a hint of life flickers across the TV screen, though the television's plug has been pulled out。
Strange nocturnal happenings, or a trick of the night?

This book is people watching in novel form。 Taking the point of view of a camera lens, the unknown narrator carries us from scene to scene, watching a few characters’ lives intertwine over one long night in Tokyo。 I could picture every scene as if a movie was playing out in my head so I guess the camera POV worked。 We get those satisfying moments where two characters are in cars right next to each other but have no idea how close they are or where one person leaves something behind and another f This book is people watching in novel form。 Taking the point of view of a camera lens, the unknown narrator carries us from scene to scene, watching a few characters’ lives intertwine over one long night in Tokyo。 I could picture every scene as if a movie was playing out in my head so I guess the camera POV worked。 We get those satisfying moments where two characters are in cars right next to each other but have no idea how close they are or where one person leaves something behind and another finds it without connecting the dots。 We don’t get answers about the meaning of what happens during the night, but I think that’s the point-we just watch on, observing the scenes for what they are and taking meaning for ourselves。 。。。more

Kniha se mi líbila。 Z této knihy vyplývá, že je důležitá komunikace mezi lidmi, zejména v rodině。 Velmi se mi také líbila hororová atmosféra, při které jsem se v některých místech bál。 :)

Murakami's writing is beautiful in its simplicity as he takes the reader into the underbelly of Tokyo while meeting with some interesting people in the span of one night。 The setting felt surreal and conversations between characters were quiet and intimate。 Highly recommend listening to the audiobook when it's too late at night to be awake。 Murakami's writing is beautiful in its simplicity as he takes the reader into the underbelly of Tokyo while meeting with some interesting people in the span of one night。 The setting felt surreal and conversations between characters were quiet and intimate。 Highly recommend listening to the audiobook when it's too late at night to be awake。 。。。more

A capable mood piece that tries to capture the feeling you get in a city at night when the pace of life is still there but it is not as relentless as the day。 "The basso continuo of the city's moan, a monotonous sound that neither rises nor falls but is pregnant with foreboding," as Murakami tells us on the very first page。 There's a sort of disconnected, conceptual, smoky jazz bar type of vibe running through the book – deliberately so – and that's either your thing or it isn't。 After Dark has A capable mood piece that tries to capture the feeling you get in a city at night when the pace of life is still there but it is not as relentless as the day。 "The basso continuo of the city's moan, a monotonous sound that neither rises nor falls but is pregnant with foreboding," as Murakami tells us on the very first page。 There's a sort of disconnected, conceptual, smoky jazz bar type of vibe running through the book – deliberately so – and that's either your thing or it isn't。 After Dark has to be something you want; it is not a book where you can just take something of worth from whatever it leads you to。 You have to want to go there, on some level。This can turn a lot of people off and even those people who are open to it might find it doesn't fulfil its promise。 Because sometimes with stuff like this, if you criticize it then other people will say you just don't 'get' it。 But even though some of the characters were well drawn and there was a metatextual angle I liked – and I am very interested in some of the themes and concepts Murakami explores here – there were also things that seemed clunky or that were being tried and just didn't work。 It might just be the translation – and trying to get Japanese syntax and social norms to play well in English must be a challenge – but it seemed a bit too stilted at times when it should have been flowing。 And even though plot is not the point here, the lack of resolution or even context (especially to the Eri Asai and Shirakawa chapters) cannot help but disappoint。 Nevertheless, I would not be put off from reading some of Murakami's more developed work, even if it is similar to After Dark, because the performance might be better there: a sort of freeform jazz in which there are movements according to the mood and the beat and the place and it all peels off into ashes。 。。。more

This is only my second Murakami, but reading his books feel like getting an elongated, warm hug。 This book is only about 200 pages but it took me so long to read because every word in this novel forced me to give it my utmost attention。

my first murakami book, and god was it good to chew on。 as surreal and enigmatic as it is, it’s also very human and ambivalent, all of which i loved about it。 the lines between dimensions become pretty blurred, but settings and interactions remained very rooted in reality。 it takes a damn good author to successfully balance the two, which makes murakami a master。 very excited to read more of his literature。

"In this world, there are things you can only do alone, and things you can only do with somebody else。 It's important to combine the two in just the right amount。"Although I wanted more from this book I still believe it is written just how it is supposed to be。 "In this world, there are things you can only do alone, and things you can only do with somebody else。 It's important to combine the two in just the right amount。"Although I wanted more from this book I still believe it is written just how it is supposed to be。 。。。more

Nightlife in Tokyo with memorable characters like a 19 year student reading a textbook that seems to parallel the reader, a Chinese prostitute who needs the help of a female wrestler after getting beaten, and a faceless man。The real highlight is the setting and pace, which weave the characters into the night as uniquely Murakami imagery and humor does gracefully。

In essence I belive there is a deeper meaning to the story, It captures a snippet (one night) of somebody's life。I enjoyed the writing style although at times a little disconnect through translation, if anything it adds defintion and makes you think more。Something that stands out for me, more than any other book I have read is Marakami's stye of describing a scene, it's as if watching a movie through a lens。 In essence I belive there is a deeper meaning to the story, It captures a snippet (one night) of somebody's life。I enjoyed the writing style although at times a little disconnect through translation, if anything it adds defintion and makes you think more。Something that stands out for me, more than any other book I have read is Marakami's stye of describing a scene, it's as if watching a movie through a lens。 。。。more

Seductive, pristine, hypnotic and dream-like, Murakami delves deep into the duality of human consciousness and its nocturnal darkness in the city of Tokyo at night explored through its seedy underbelly of chinese prostitutes and gangsters, love hotels and lost youth, and lonely residents trapped in a life of routine, whose psychic shadow comes out beneath the lapels of that darkness。

I picked this up knowing I would love it because I already gave a 5-star rating to Kafka on the Shore。Sis didn't disappoint。 But I think I need more。After Dark has one of those premises that piques the interest of many but has to reel them in deeper if it wants to let them love the whole story。 As a college student who basically lived in all-nighters, I was immediately intrigued by the whole time situation。 But, the end isn't there for me。 I don't know but, something doesn't add up with all the I picked this up knowing I would love it because I already gave a 5-star rating to Kafka on the Shore。Sis didn't disappoint。 But I think I need more。After Dark has one of those premises that piques the interest of many but has to reel them in deeper if it wants to let them love the whole story。 As a college student who basically lived in all-nighters, I was immediately intrigued by the whole time situation。 But, the end isn't there for me。 I don't know but, something doesn't add up with all the storylines。I still would recommend it though, especially for those who wants a quick Murakami read。 。。。more

It's quite interesting that Murakami writes in the form of a film script but also constantly breaking the fourth wall。I love the simple plot that takes place over one night and the classic unexplained loose ends in his ending。 The night life of Tokyo, the underground activities in the big city, Murakami sucks us into this scene so effortlessly like the city is a part of his consciousness。 A story about people dealing with changes, the past, and transitioning into new places: through running away It's quite interesting that Murakami writes in the form of a film script but also constantly breaking the fourth wall。I love the simple plot that takes place over one night and the classic unexplained loose ends in his ending。 The night life of Tokyo, the underground activities in the big city, Murakami sucks us into this scene so effortlessly like the city is a part of his consciousness。 A story about people dealing with changes, the past, and transitioning into new places: through running away, sleeping away, or facing them。I wanted to know more about Shirakawa who is a piece of shit and why Eri is somehow connected to him? Hallucinatory dreamscapes, voyeuristic surveillance of a chronically sleeping girl trapped inside a TV, a digression about a Chinese prostitute brutalized in a love hotel, and Carveresque dialogue at a Denny's between two awkward Japanese teenagers。 It's about the interconnectedness of transit and cities; it's about the replaceability and irreplaceability of people; it's about reincarnation; it's about sisterhood。 I found this mesmerizing story-telling, yet the end offered only ecphrasis instead Hallucinatory dreamscapes, voyeuristic surveillance of a chronically sleeping girl trapped inside a TV, a digression about a Chinese prostitute brutalized in a love hotel, and Carveresque dialogue at a Denny's between two awkward Japanese teenagers。 It's about the interconnectedness of transit and cities; it's about the replaceability and irreplaceability of people; it's about reincarnation; it's about sisterhood。 I found this mesmerizing story-telling, yet the end offered only ecphrasis instead of catharsis。 。。。more

⭐️ 4。5Murakami’s one of the best authors to read before going to bed, because he already dreams you into distant, strange worlds, that still seem familiar and quite magical。 Something about this book felt particularly nostalgic and it had that very special neon-city-at-night vibe that went perfectly with some lofi music or jazz。 Reading it felt like floating in an endless space, bounded by the end of the night。 Could be a new comfort book💫

Set in Tokyo, thisbeautifully written short novel focuses on the lives of 4 people--3 somewhat disaffected young people, and a middle-aged man--in one night。 If you are looking for an action novel or even one with a plot, this is not for you。 But somehow, I feel better for having read it。
